The SEMO 4H All Youth Horse Show begins today at 1 p.m at the Flickerwood Arena in Fruitland.

There are six competition classes, the Gaited Horses, Quarter Horses, Pleasure Class, Equitation Class, Speed Events, and a Fun Class, according to Cheryl Hanschen, leader of the SEMO Equestrian 4H Club.

In the Pleasure Class the horse is judged. In the Equitation Class the rider is judged.

In the Fun Class, there will be pole bending competitions, barrel races, and an egg and spoon contest.

In addition to the six classes, there are three divisions. The novice division for beginners of all ages, a 13 and under division, and a 14-18 age group make up the three different divisions.

"We will probably have more than 65 participating in the show," Hanschen said.

Hanschen added that riders from Illinois, Kentucky, St. Louis, Sikeston and local riders would be competing at the show.

The riders will be trying to win trophies and ribbons for their efforts today.

Admission to the show is $1 and the proceeds go toward putting on another horse show next year.

"The kids that compete at our shows have gone on to compete at other shows very well," Hanschen said.

The riders' entry fee is $2 per class or $12 to enter in every event, according to Hanschen.

The SEMO Equestrian 4H All Youth Horse Show is in its sixth year, according to Hanschen.

"Participation has grown every year," Hanschen said.

The group changed to Flickerwood Arena, because it is an indoor arena and weather is no longer a factor, Hanschen said.
