The new store is scheduled to open its doors on Oct. 3.
The Sears building at 2101 Williams St. was empty on Sunday and the sign on the doors read "We're closed! Look forward to seeing you at the new Sears Grand."
Employees were inside packing up the remaining clothing racks and display tables. Almost all evidence that a department store occupied the building for the past 43 years, was gone.
Store manager Jason Harvey said that Sears' last day in the building on William Street was Saturday. The new Sears Grand, located on Siemers Drive, will open its doors on Oct. 3 with a grand opening scheduled for Oct. 15.
"Everything was completely sold," Harvey said about the merchandise in Sears.
"The only thing that was left were some racks, which will be sold to other department stores."
The new Sears Grand will be one of only nine planned in the entire nation. Harvey said that the Cape Girardeau store location will be the fifth one to open.
"I think it's going to be amazing," he said.
"We really needed more space and move in a different direction."
The former Sears building is about 80,000 square feet; the new building has more than 150,000 square feet.
Sears Grand will offer everything the former store did and more. Grocery items and a plant nursery will be located in the new store.
