BENTON -- New voter I.D. cards will be mailed to Scott County voters this week.

Missouri election law requires the county clerks throughout the state to issue the cards in each even numbered year prior to the statewide primary.

County Clerk Bob Kielhofner said registered voters, who do not receive new I.D. cards, should contact his office in Benton to correct their addresses and ensure they are legally registered in the proper precinct.

If any of the information on the I.D. card is incorrect, the voter should contact the county clerk's office at 545-3549.

If there is a recent "change of address" order on file with the post office, Kielhofner is asking the postmaster to return the card with the current address for that voter. "If we can obtain that kind of information from the post office, then we can help the voter change their registration without having to re-register," he said.

"However, when the voter's change of address order is expired with the post office and the I.D. card is sent back to the county clerk as undeliverable and no forwarding address is available, then that voter is removed from the voter registration file," Kielhofner said.

"Women who were registered to vote in their maiden name or who may have remarried since they last registered to vote will need to re-register," he said.

For new voters, the registration deadline for the Aug. 2 primary election is July 6.

The city halls at Oran, Chaffee, Scott City, Sikeston, Morley and Miner have voter registration outreach offices, and voters can also register at schools and other sites in the county.
