SCOTT CITY -- The filing period for Scott City Council and mayoral candidates opens Dec. 3. The mayor's seat and four council seats, one in each ward, are up for re-election.
The municipal election is scheduled for April 7, and a primary election is set for early March. The filing period closes Dec. 31.
Mayor Shirley Young was first elected to the post in April 1990, after having served as acting mayor for a year. Before that, Young was a member of the city council.
Young was first elected to the council in 1982, and served on the council up until she was appointed acting mayor in 1989, except for a six-month period in 1986.
Council seats up for re-election are that of Jim McClintock, Ward 1; John Rogers, Ward 2; Ron Oller, Ward 3; and Jay Cassout, Ward 4.
McClintock was first elected to the council in 1988. He oversees the city's budget committee and is the council representative of the police department.
Rogers was elected to the post in 1990, but previously served on the Illmo Board of Aldermen and the Scott City Council during the towns' consolidation. He is a member of the budget committee and reports to the council on the city's cemetery and beautification.
Oller was elected to the council in 1990, replacing Young's Ward 3 seat. Oller reports to the council on the Parks and Recreation Department and the Public Works Department.
Cassout is in his first term on the council, and oversees the fire department and parks department.
Council seats not up for re-election are Brenda Moyers, Ward 1; Jim Cauble, Ward 2; Jerry Cummins, Ward 3; and John Smith, Ward 4.
City Clerk Nona Walls said a primary election will be necessary only if more than two candidates file for any one seat.
Candidates must be a registered voter in their ward and should file at City Hall. Filing fee is $1, Walls said.
