SCOTT CITY, Mo. -- A 14-year-old student is in serious condition after reportedly walking into the path of a vehicle before school Friday morning.

Joseph Hays of Scott City was admitted to Southeast Missouri Hospital after an accident on Main Street near Crites Street in Scott City.

According to Scott City police officer Jackie Wilson, Hays was walking northbound in the direction of his school around 7 a.m. Friday when he attempted to cross Main Street to enter a gas station. Wilson said witnesses told police Hays did not check traffic before crossing the street and was struck by an eastbound vehicle.

No charges have been filed in the incident.
