Dates have been set for the center turn-lane project to begin in Scott City.

At Monday's Scott City council meeting, city administrator Ron Eskew said construction will begin June 1 on Main Street from Crites Street to Chester Avenue and continue through Sept. 1.

The project will add to the street a center turn lane, then repave and restripe it.

Eskew hopes the timetable will be the least disruptive, because it will take place when school is not in session.

Mayor Tim Porch said when construction begins, a regulation should be in place prohibiting hazardous-load vehicles or gas tankards from using Main Street to go through town. He suggested using Route AB as a detour for trucks. The only exceptions would be local trucks and delivery vehicles.

"We'll make it through," Porch said. "It's going to be an inconvenience for the summer, but ultimately, it will make it nice," he said.

Councilors discussed working with the railroad so it won't damage the new road once the railroad decides to make repairs.

Other topics included getting plans from the Missouri Department of Transportation so the city can repair or add sidewalks along the improved Main Street and possibly installing crosswalks.

In other business:

  • The city approved a contract with Teen Challenge to maintain cemeteries from March to October.
  • The council approved public works director Jack Rasnic's purchase of two used trucks for the department at a cost of $5,800.
  • A home on Second Street East was confirmed for demolition, as well as the deconstruction of two sheds on Mary Street.
  • The city discussed buying the home of Dr. James Campbell at Main Street and Chester Avenue. The homeowner and city may agree to have the home donated in return for a tax credit.
