SCOTT CITY -- When it came to placing an ad for a new superintendent, the Scott City Board of Education decided to search the Internet.

The board placed a personnel ad on the Internet in addition to using a placement service at Southeast Missouri State University and the University of Missouri-Columbia to find a replacement.

Superintendent Doug Berry announced his retirement last month. Berry has been a school administrator for more than 20 years.

The board meets at 6:30 tonight in the superintendent's office, 3000 Main St.

Board president Gale Dale wasn't sure how many candidates had applied via the Internet or through the mail since the deadline for applications was Tuesday. At last count only four candidates had sent in complete applications while five others had partial ones.

Board member Nancy Caldwell suggested placing the Internet ad.

The idea actually came from a school librarian who had seen a principal vacancy listed on the MOREnet, Caldwell said.

"But it couldn't hurt to have more publicity," she said, adding that the board also used placement services that advertised on the Internet.

Tonight, the board likely will sort through applications and narrow its list of candidates.

"I'm kind of excited," Dale said, adding that she is interested in setting up interviews and meetings soon. "I think it will be fun. I enjoyed hiring for the principal and coach." The board hired a new elementary principal and football coach for the 1995-96 school year.
