SCOTT CITY -- The Missouri Department of Economic Development (DED) has awarded Scott City a $345,250 Emergency Flood Infrastructure Grant.
The grant is made available through the Community Development Block Grant program and is contingent upon completion of requirements set forth by the program.
The funds will be used to make street improvements in Scott City's Industrial Park, located north of the city. The area incurred severe flood damage last summer, when waters of the swollen Diversion Channel overtook areas of Nash Road. Both the main entrance to the industrial area and the streets within the park incurred damage.
The emergency grant will allow permanent improvements, which include paving and widening streets and improving the current drainage system. These improvements are necessary to allow 15 companies employing more than 400 people to remain in the area.
"The Department of Economic Development is working diligently with local governments to provide emergency funding in areas that were damaged by the 1993 flood," said Joe Driskill, DED director. "I am pleased this department is able to award funding to Scott City, so that its industrial park can continue to house important members of the business community and provide jobs for citizens there."
The grand is made under the block grant flood recovery program, which is administered by DED. The program provides funds to Missouri's smaller communities to help solve flood-related emergencies that present an immediate threat to health and safety when local funds are inadequate or unavailable to correct the situation.
