Scott City police are among law enforcement officers joining a weeklong increased enforcement period for drunken driving laws.

"It's never worth the risk to drive while under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Drivers could lose their license, pay large fines or, worst of all, cause a tragic loss of life," said police chief Dave Leeman in a statement issued announcing the heightened enforcement.

Leeman offered the following safe driving tips:

  • If you expect to drive, don't drink.
  • Don't risk driving if you've been drinking.
  • Take a bus, call a taxi or ask a friend to drive you home.
  • Party hosts should offer alcohol-free beverages.
  • Report impaired drivers to police.
  • Always wear a safety belt; it's the best defense against an impaired driver.
