SCOTT CITY, Mo. -- Scott City police say a man walking along the railroad tracks was struck and killed by a Union Pacific train shortly before midnight Friday.
Rodney Pyle, 27, of Scott City was struck from behind while walking westward on the tracks near Main and State streets, police Capt. Janice Stroup said.
The area where he was walking has two sets of tracks, Stroup said.
"The train engineer advised us that he blew the whistle three or four times, so maybe Mr. Pyle thought it was on the other track," Stroup said. "It's just absolutely unknown what his thinking was."
Police received the emergency call from a railroad employee at 11:52 p.m. Friday and dispatched an ambulance to the scene.
No foul play is suspected.
Pyle moved to Scott City from Du Quoin, Ill., to take a job with a steel construction company.
