BENTON, Mo. -- A Scott City man is facing an array of charges after a chase that reached speeds of 105 miles per hour.
Matthew Angel Lowe, 38, is charged with the felonies of driving while revoked/suspended; resisting arrest by fleeing and creating a substantial risk of serious injury or death to any person; and misdemeanor charges of operating a motor vehicle in a careless and imprudent manner, failure to drive on the right half of the roadway when the roadway was of sufficient width, exceeding the posted speed limit by 25 mph or more and failure to stop for a stop sign.
At 1:34 a.m. Thursday, Scott County deputy John Caudle was operating radar on Route M at Wheeler Drive in Scott City when he saw a westbound vehicle traveling at 73 mph. The posted speed limit is 35 mph, according to a news release from Scott County Sheriff Rick Walter.
Caudle activated his vehicle's patrol lights and siren, attempting to make a traffic stop, Walter reported. The driver, later identified as Lowe, sped up and traveled at 105 mph on Route M between Scott City and Chaffee, Missouri, the sheriff said.
According to the report, the vehicle crossed the centerline and drove in the wrong lane several times during the pursuit.
Caudle pursued the vehicle into Chaffee, where it was reportedly traveling at 80 mph in a 30-mph zone and failed to stop at the four-way stop at Route M (North Main Street) and Route A (Yoakum Avenue), with the vehicle sliding sideways.
Lowe continued to drive east on Route A toward New Hamburg, Missouri, reaching speeds of 95 mph, then drove 70 mph in a 25-mph zone in New Hamburg. The vehicle failed to stop at several stop signs, traveling at 105 mph as it sped north on U.S. 61.
The Missouri State Highway Patrol assisted with stopping the vehicle south of Kelso, Missouri, on U.S. 61 by deploying spike strips and disabling the vehicle.
Lowe exited the vehicle, running west behind a residence.
"Lowe was chased and ignored commands to stop," Walter said. "He ran for some distance and finally halted in a cow pasture, cursed and implored the deputy to shoot him."
Lowe, who then was taken into custody without a struggle, reportedly told the officers he fled "because it was a rush and his driver's license was revoked."
