SCOTT CITY -- Seven members of the Scott City Council used an expense-paid trip to Las Vegas to visit the Lady Luck Gaming Corp. headquarters as a learning experience, members said Monday.
The council members and their spouses spent Friday through Sunday in Las Vegas, touring Lady Luck's casinos and meeting with company executives and employees.
Scott City chose Lady Luck as its riverboat gambling operator in April. On July 19, after several weeks of negotiation, the city signed a contract with the company.
"In Las Vegas, we were able to see their operation from top to bottom," said Ward 2 Councilman John Rogers, who serves as the city's gaming committee chairman. "We were privy to some of the behind-the-scenes, closed-door aspects of gaming that most people don't see."
Ward 1 Councilwoman Brenda Moyers, a member of the gaming committee said the company is forthright and family oriented.
"We all enjoyed the trip immensely," said Moyers, speaking for the council. "We came back sure that we had made the right decision in choosing Lady Luck."
Scott City Mayor Larry Forhan on Monday appointed Moyers, Rogers and Ward 3 Councilman Jerry Cummins to the board of a newly-formed non-profit organization, specifically designed to handle donations made to the city by Lady Luck, for charitable purposes.
The three council members will meet with City Attorney Francis Siebert this week, to iron out some details of the corporation and to give it a name.
