In conjunction with the annual SEMO Writing Achievement Awards competition, L.J. Schultz Middle School has announced the winners of its recent school writing contest.
Casey Ferden, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. David Ludolph, won the essay competition with her entry, "The Garden."
Monaca Johnson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Campbell, submitted the winning poem, "Why?"
Anna Hicks, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James Hicks, won the fiction category with her story, "Nothing to Hide."
The first place entries now advance to regional judging at Southeast Missouri State University. Winners will be notified in the spring.
Other winners of the Schultz contest included: essay - Caroline Eom, second place, Julie McGowen, third place; poetry - Annise Maguire, second place, Bonquita Cox, third place; fiction - Meagan Edmonds, second place, Rachel Hessenkemper, third place.
This is the 12th year for the writing awards program. Last year 72 schools from the Southeast Missouri area participated, with 348 students submitting their writing.
