Laura Sheets, a seventh grader at Schultz Middle School, was recognized at a recent meeting of the Cape West Rotary club as winner of the club's annual essay contest.

Theme for the contest was "Preserve our Community: Planet Earth." Laura's entry advanced to district level competition.

The honor is one of many Sheets has received this spring. She won the Schultz Middle School Student of the Year; first place in the Missouri Interscholastic Press Association's feature writing competition; and club, zone and regional honors in the 1991 Optimist Oratorical Contest.

She has been involved in a number of activities at Schultz this past year. She was in Student Council, Junior Beta Club, Probe, Newspaper Staff and Peer Helpers.

Laura is the daughter of Mr. and Ms. Robert Sheets of 1827 Niemann in Cape Girardeau.
