The Mathcounts team from L.J. Schultz Middle School in Cape Girardeau captured first place during the annual Southeast Chapter competition.

The team from Cape Girardeau Central Junior High School placed third, and St. Vincent de Paul Grade School in Cape Girardeau earned fifth place.

Second place went to Twin Rivers and fourth place to Poplar Bluff Junior High.

The first three teams will advance to state competition, scheduled March 27.

The annual Mathcounts competition is conducted by the Southeast Chapter of the Missouri Society of Professional Engineers. Seventh and eighth grade students participate.

In addition to team competition, students are honored for individual achievements. The top 10 students are 1. Jesse Perry, Charleston Junior High; 2. Trent Redfearn, Central Junior High; 3. Brandon Belvin, L.J. Schultz; 4. Aaron Malone, Poplar Bluff Junior High; 5. Daniel Puckett, Twin Rivers; 6. Derek Fenwick, St. Vincent de Paul; 7. Brad Deken, Twin Rivers; 8. Wade Russell, Central Jr. High; 9. Amy Strickland, Oak Ridge; 10. Nicki Klien, Valle Grade School.
