Candidates for the Cape Girardeau Board of Education have been invited to participate in a public forum to be conducted Thursday night by the League of Women Voters of Cape Girardeau County. In addition, the proposed school bond issue will be discussed.
Sandy Bonner, LWV voter service chairwoman, will moderate the forum, which will follow the established procedures for such league events.
Candidates are: Kathy Swan, 1302 Kenwood; Steven W. Wright, Route 2; Dr. Jack L. Sterrett, 835 Karau Lane; and John E. Campbell, 2102 Yorktown.
The speakers will appear in alphabetical order, and each will be allowed a three-minute opening statement. Questions from the audience will be written and will be screened by a league committee to avoid repetition and to assure that the wording of each question is in general terms rather than directed at one candidate.
Each candidate will be allowed two minutes in which to answer the question; the order of answering will be alternated with each question. Each speaker may give a two-minute closing statement.
Also, in accordance with league policies, candidates may neither wear nor hand out any type of campaign material on the premises.
The forum will be held at 7 p.m. in the Central Junior High School cafeteria.
Also planned is an informational discussion of the proposed $25 million school bond issue.
As a non-partisan political organization, LWV does not endorse individual candidates; it provides an opportunity for the voting public to become acquainted with the candidates and their position; the league neither supports nor opposes the bond issue, which is also on the April 6 ballot.
