Cape Girardeau school board members postponed awarding a bid for the new vocational school Thursday after construction bids for the project came in more than 50 percent higher than the lowest estimated cost.

The project was expected to cost between $7 million and $8 million. The lowest bid was $10,991,000 and the highest $11, 245,000. The low bid was 57 percent higher than the $7 million estimate and 38 percent higher than the $8 million estimate.

The board was scheduled to award the bid at noon Thursday.

Instead, the board hired employees, approved a grant application and modified plans for Blanchard Elementary School.

Administrators and five Board of Education members attended the short meeting at the board office, 61 N. Clark. The Rev. William Bird and Dr. Bob Fox were absent.

Another issue scheduled for action was also removed from the agenda. Board members later will consider an extra-duty salary schedule for teachers serving as athletic coaches or sponsors for extra-curricular activities.

Board members unanimously approved a change order for Blanchard School. Superintendent Dr. Dan Tallent said the change to bid specifications will cost about $6,000. Two concrete, reinforced curbs will be installed to support the circular, paved drive. The change was necessary because the previous design would have deteriorated in hot weather, Tallent said.

Also approved by board members was an application to continue the district's "Communicating the Health Connection" program that has been in place for about a year. If approved, the district will receive $4,970. The grant does not require the district to match funding.
