The Cape Girardeau Board of Education awarded several bids for remodeling projects during a special meeting held at noon Thursday.
The district is in the early stages of several projects as part of its long-range facilities improvement plans. During the meeting, board members approved bids to install technology wiring at Clippard, Blanchard and Alma Schrader schools and for construction and remodeling work at Alma Schrader.
The technology wiring bids were considered separately for the three schools to receive the best total price for the work. Board members approved the $14,532.75 bid from Technology and Networking for the Clippard project. Telcom Services Installation Inc. won the bids for Alma Schrader and Blanchard schools with submitted bids of $19,325.14 and $31,354.46, respectively.
The total cost to the district to improve wiring for data and video input to each classroom is $65,212.35.
Board members awarded a construction project at Alma Schrader to low bidder Sides Construction. The bid, $1,594,330, covers general repairs and improvement outlined in the district's master plan, as well as construction of a cafeteria and a kindergarten, art and behavior disorder classroom.
In other business, the school board voted to accept a bid of $37,500 per acre from Place Collegiate Properties for the purchase of some 11 acres of land. The company was the sole bidder for the property, located at the intersection of Sprigg and Bertling streets.
Dr. Steve Del Vecchio, business manager for the school district, said the company's intent is to build housing for college students on the property. The sale is subject to several contingencies, including various developmental reports and a change in the zoning of the property, and a "satisfactory completion of the district check of their references," he said.
"Our position I think is if we do something like this, we have a responsibility to make sure they're going to keep up the building, keep up the grounds," said Del Vecchio. "That's why some of those contingencies are on there."
