Schnuck Markets issued a product advisory Tuesday afternoon alerting customers that some containers of milk may contain traces of cocoa powder.
The milk in question includes gallon containers of Schnucks brand and Sealtest half percent milk, and half gallon and quart containers of Schnucks brand half percent milk with a "last sale date" of Nov. 12.
Schnucks representatives said a mechanical malfunction allowed traces of chocolate milk to leak into half percent milk during pasteurization Friday. The amount of cocoa powder present was so small it could not be picked up by standard quality control tests.
About 5,000 gallons of half percent milk may have been affected. All affected containers have been removed from store shelves, and customers can return the product for a full refund or replacement.
