'Going Public' show to discuss library expansion

Cape Girardeau Public Library director Betty Martin will discuss the library's proposed expansion project on Southeast Public Radio's "Going Public" show on Sunday. The 3 p.m. show will also include interviews with David Briggs, a history instructor at Southeast Missouri State University, and Darlene Bradley, assistant director of the Retired Senior Volunteer Program/Volunteer Intergenerational Program. Briggs will discuss his combat experiences in the Vietnam War. Bradley will talk about her organization and the role of volunteers in the community. The program will be broadcast on National Public Radio affiliate stations KRCU, 90.9 FM; and KSEF, 88.9 FM.

The Arts Council of Southeast Missouri is still taking sign-ups for its annual Trivia Night fund-raiser at 6:30 p.m. Jan. 20 at the Cape Senior Center. Teams of eight will compete to see which is most knowledgeable. Door prizes will be given away and the winners will also receive prizes, including gift certificates for area restaurants, tickets for St. Louis Cardinals and St. Louis Rams games, season tickets to the Southeast Missouri Symphony Orchestra and Southeast Missouri State University Theatre and Dance season, movie tickets and more. Foundation to hold 'Penguin Party'

The Cape Girardeau Public School Foundation will host its first Annual Drive Gala on Feb. 3 at the Cape Girardeau Country Club. This year's gala, titled "Penguin Party" for its black-and-white theme, is open to individuals and businesses. The goal is to raise funds for the foundation's "Great Ideas" teaching grants, foundation officials said. Foundation president Stacy Kinder said the foundation's goal is to enrich teaching, inspire learning and enhance opportunities for students in the school system. The party is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. with a social hour. The Central High School Jazz Band will perform. That will be followed by a dinner, an auction and dancing. Local band Mudpuppy will provide the dance music. For reservations, contact the foundation office at 651-0555.
