Dogs and cats need love, too. As do puppies and kittens. Many need permanent homes.

In the meantime, however, the animals housed at Safe Harbor Animal Sanctuary need food, litter boxes, beds, toys and a clean and safe environment.

To help gather the necessities, Engelmann Farms is sponsoring three stuff-a-truck locations from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday. Trucks will be accepting donations at two Cape Girardeau sites -- Petco Pet Supplies, 266 Siemers Drive, and Kmart, 11 S. Kingshighway -- and at the Safe Harbor Thrift Store, 3862 E. Jackson Blvd. in Jackson.

Preferred animal foods include the 4 Health brand, which is available at Tractor Supply Co., 501 S. Kingshighway, and Purina. Also on the sanctuary's "wish list," as provided by Clara Engelmann, are litter boxes -- her list says under-bed storage boxes make great litter boxes -- as well as clumping cat litter, 5-gallon metal buckets, cat beds, dog and cat toys, cedar shavings and straw for dog kennels, cat-scratching posts and bird seed.

Also accepted are retail gift cards to allow the future purchase of animal and facility supplies; cleaning items including chlorine bleach, paper towels, disinfectant, mops and buckets, laundry detergent and large trash bags; and office supplies including postage stamps, color and white copier paper and No. 10 envelopes.

Safe Harbor is a no-kill, free-roam animal sanctuary, the goal of which is to provide a safe refuge and to find loving lifelong owners for homeless cats and dogs in Cape Girardeau County and the area, according to its website. With the help of local veterinarians, all animals of the appropriate age that come into Safe Harbor's care are spayed or neutered, and are provided basic inoculations. The shelter is at 359 Cree Lane in Jackson.

The shelter's thrift store accepts donations of household items and clothing for resale, with money raised helping to fund the sanctuary's operations.
