This picture, made more attractive by the coating of snow, shows the hill country in and about the area in east Central Cape County where it is proposed to establish a State Park. In the immediate foreground is the Iona School, which sits in the southwest corner of the 3,000-acre tract. The park area itself lies generally east, or to the right, of the school, but is surrounded by rolling hills, some of which may be noted in the photograph. A farm-to-market road provides access to the school from both Cape Girardeau and Jackson; the two towns being almost equidistanct from the park area. (Missourian archives photo by G.D. Campster School on Bloomfield Road was built in 1940 and replaced an 1858 brick structure. Classes continued in the stone school until the mid 1960s. In 1971 it became the Cerebral Palsy Center, and in 1994 it was sold by the Cape Girardeau School Board to a private individual, who converted it into an antique store. This photo was taken in 1945. This one-room school (Iona School) is located in Cape County District R-4 in which voters will ballot Saturday on a $150,000 bond issue to erect a centrally-located school at Egypt Mills to serve the entire district. It is to have eight classrooms, a multi-purpose room which could be used as a community center, a cafeteria and other modern facilities. The new building would make use of six smaller schools unnecessary: Coker and Iona, the latter near the entrance to Trail of Tears State Park; the Brooks School on Bend Road; Egypt Mills; Indian Creek and Juden.
