Heather Cook and Davique Dumars recently were chosen from a field of 600 dance students to receive scholarships at a Kansas City dance convention.
Cook is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Cook of Oran, and Dumars is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. David Dumars of Cape Girardeau.
At the convention, students took classes from several well known ballet, tap, jazz and hip hop instructors.
During the scholarship competition, students were divided into junior and senior age divisions. Dumars, 14, won the senior division and will attend the Broadway Dance Center in New York on a scholarship next summer.
Both Dumars and Cook are students of Gaymarie Tomlinson at Royale Ballet & School of Performing Arts in Cape Girardeau. The girls take classes for 15 hours each week, rehearsing for dance competitions in January.
Other Royale Ballet students selected for scholarship consideration were: Natalie Kapper, 11, of Jonesboro, Ill.; Allison Brune, 15, of Cape Girardeau; and Sally Dickson, 16, of Cape Girardeau.
All five students will be featured on an upcoming edition of "Heartland Kids" because they are members of the 1994-95 Starpower First Place Grand National Dance Champions.
