Roy Blunt, Peter Kinder to appear at Cape Girardeau GOP event Saturday

U.S. Senate candidate and congressman Roy Blunt will make an appearance at Saturday's GOP Pig Roast in Cape Girardeau.

The event will feature remarks by Blunt, Lt. Gov. Peter Kinder, Republican Party executive director Lloyd Smith and other public officials.

"We won't have a bunch of presentations, but it will be more like a meet and greet, with any comments interspersed throughout," said Holly Lintner of the Cape Girardeau Republican Party. "It will be a great time to meet those representing you, though a lot of them won't be here because they'll be out of town for the holiday weekend."

The event at Cape Girardeau County Park South, pavilion No. 21, kicks off at 5:30 p.m., with food served at 6 p.m. The event will end around 8 p.m. T-shirts will be sold at the event.

"The shirts will play on the elimination of pork in our country," Litner said. "The shirts will let folks know that the GOP wants to gouge out pork and will have an elephant in a suit roasting a pig over a fire."

Blunt announced his intention to run for Missouri's open U.S. Senate seat Feb. 19. He is the only Republican to have announced a bid for the 2010 Senate race.

The only Democrat candidate to announce a run at the seat is Missouri Secretary of State Robin Carnahan.

Candidates for the race will be vying replace Sen. Kit Bond, who is retiring.
