Route K resurfacing project set to start

A contractor is scheduled to begin preparations today to resurface Route K from Interstate 55 to Highway 25, Missouri Department of Transportation officials said.

The initial work will involve replacing in-pavement traffic sensors at busy Route K and Siemers Drive. The actual repaving with asphalt is expected to start in early November.

Road work will take place from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Highway 25 area and from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on the eastern section of Route K near Siemers Drive.

The paving itself on the two-lane highway could take two to two and a half weeks, MoDOT district engineer Mark Shelton said.

Some lane reductions and temporary traffic delays are expected during the road work, he said.

Motorists are encouraged to use alternate routes where possible, he said.

No paving or replacement of traffic sensors will take place in the area around Siemers Drive and the entrance to Wal-Mart on Fridays and weekends, MoDOT officials said.

Shelton said this schedule should cause less disruption for motorists.

Apex Paving of Cape Girardeau is the contractor on the $1.49 million resurfacing project.

The project will be done in two phases. The first phase will extend from Highway 25 to Interstate 55. The second phase will extend from I-55 to Kingshighway.

The contractor plans to do the second phase of the project next year, Shelton said.
