SIKESTON, Mo. -- After months of relatively calm in the Luther and Osage area, a problem arose this week when a large crowd again began throwing rocks and bottles at police.

The incident began around 9 p.m. Monday when Sikeston police responded to a report of someone breaking out the rear window of a vehicle using a slingshot and ball bearing.

An infant in the back seat of the vehicle was injured.

When the first officer arrived he noticed Matthew Perry, who was thought a suspect in breaking out the glass. However, Perry would not allow officers to arrest him and forcibly resisted.

While officers tried to arrest Perry between 100 and 150 people gathered in the area and began throwing bottles and large rocks at the officers. Many of the people appeared to be coming out of an old club on the 200 block of Luther.

Additional police were dispatched and, after a short time, order was restored. Several arrests were made.

Five people were charged in the incident.
