Section of Whitener Street to be closed Work on a Cape Girardeau drainage improvement project will close Whitener Street from Silver Springs Road to Pind Wood Lane for about three weeks, the city announced Tuesday. Route K in Bollinger County reduced

Route K in northern Bollinger County will be reduced to one lane of traffic for the rest of the week while Missouri Department of Transportation crews do maintenance work on the bridge over the Whitewater River. The section of road is between Route WW and Bollinger County Road 236. Weather permitting, the work was scheduled to begin at 8 a.m. Tuesday and continue through Friday. Crews will be at the work site from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. daily. Motorists are asked to use caution in the area.

Route H to be reduced to one lane

Route H in northern Perry County and southern Ste. Genevieve County will be reduced to one lane of traffic beginning Thursday and continuing through next week while a contractor works on an asphalt resurfacing project. The section of road runs from U.S. 61 near St. Mary, Mo., to Highway 51 near McBride, Mo. The work is scheduled to begin at 6:30 a.m. Thursday, with crews on site from 6:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. each day. The work zone will be marked with signs.

Tuesday morning fire damages Cape home

An early morning fire Tuesday caused extensive damage to a Cape Girardeau home, but the family living in the structure escaped. According to Cape Girardeau Fire Department battalion chief Fred Vincel, the fire at 1003 Ranney Ave. occurred at 3:21 a.m. The home sustained about $25,000 in damage. Vincel said an aggressive interior attack brought the fire under control. The cause and origin of the fire is under investigation.
