Magnets are drawing soldiers and their families closer together.
This year the Southeast Missouri Chapter of the American Red Cross has been raising money by selling magnetic ribbons. Those funds have been used through the Armed Forces Communication Program to send messages between soldiers and families in times of emergency.
The magnet sales have raised $4,525, and recently Thrivent Financial for Lutherans City of Roses Chapter donated another $800 to the cause.
"This generous gift enables the Red Cross to continue our longstanding tradition of ensuring members of our military and their families are never out of touch," said American Red Cross executive director Mary Burton.
And the ribbons are still for sale. They can be purchased at the Red Cross office, 2430 Myra Drive, Cape Girardeau, or at these area businesses: Back Porch Antiques, Bi-State Convenience Stores, Cashbook Journal, Kidd's convenience stores, the Southeast Missourian and Style Stop Lifestyles. Five designs are available including camouflage; red, white and blue; POW/MIAs; support our troops; and support America.
