"History of the Critz, Clippard, Snider and Jenkins Families," a family history and genealogy book, is now available.
The book, by Doris Brennecke Davault, a retired Jackson school teacher, "traces my husband's maternal family from North Carolina to Missouri from 1800 to 1993," said Davault, who also authored an earlier history and genealogy book.
Her latest book starts with Elizabeth Critz (Crites) and her father, Peter Critz (Crites), who were among the 20 families who moved from North Carolina to Burfordville in 1800, led by Col. Frederick Bollinger.
"They crossed the Mississippi River on New Year's Day of 1800 at Ste. Genevieve," writes Davault.
Eighteen years later, Elizabeth Crites and Daniel Clippard were married in Missouri on July 16, 1818. Clippard had also moved to Missouri from North Carolina.
The Clippards raised nine children, and many of their descendants have remained in Cape Girardeau and Bollinger counties.
"By publishing this book, I hope to preserve the rich history of Peter Crites Jr.; his daughter, Elizabeth Crites; her husband, Daniel Clippard; and their descendants.
The book, which consists of 156 pages, 84 pictures and several interesting stories, is available in hardback or ivory leatherette soft-cover. Additional information is available by calling Davault at 243-3207.
Davault is a native of Cape Girardeau, and has lived in Jackson the past 37 years. She was a high school business teacher at Jackson High School for 31 years, retiring in 1976. She attended Southeast Missouri State University where she received bachelor of science and master's degrees in business education.
"It has taken many hours and days of writing letters and contacting people over the past several months to compile the needed family history and genealogy for this book," said Davault, who became interested in genealogy in the early 1970s when she became a member of the John Guild Chapter National Society Daughters of the American Revolution.
Davault's husband, William Hughes Davault, is also a retired school teacher. They have been married 52 years.
"My mother-in-law, Anna Jenkins Davault, was a great grandchild of Daniel and Elizabeth (Crites) Clippard," she said.
