The Missouri Legislature has introduced a bill that would allow primary enforcement of seat belt violations. Currently, a driver or passenger can be ticketed for not wearing a seat belt only if the vehicle is stopped for another traffic violation. Under the new law, police could issue a citation even if no other violation were found. The Southeast Missourian asked, "Should polce be able to pull over a driver solely for not wearing a seat belt?" Due to rounding, percentages may not add up to 100. (778 votes)

* 32 percent: yes

  • My '70s Escort isn't even equipped with seat belts. What do I do then, lie to the cops or just pay them money?
  • Wearing seat belts should not be a law.
  • If not, too many more lives could be lost in local accidents.
  • It is the law, isn't it? If you can be pulled over for speeding, I guess they should be able to pull you over for your seat belt. Although I think there are worse crimes the police should be concerned with.
  • No, if they're that stupid, let nature take its course and weed them out.
  • I agree that seat belts are lifesavers and my family and I wear them every time we are in a vehicle. However, there are more important things to worry about -- like stopping speeders and those who are committing moving violations. There are too many laws on the books now.
  • They can pull you over for disobeying every other traffic law, why not this one?
  • This is just a money-grabbing scheme that has nothing to do with safety.
  • It just gives police another reason to stop us blacks.
  • Personal freedom ... ERODED!
  • Surely there are more important things the police should be working on, like speeding, drunk driving, running red lights and stop signs.
  • The driving law is just as important as all other laws on the books. They stop you for a light out, etc. Plus, I've seen children not in car seats, sitting on the lap of adults. This needs to addressed as well.
  • It's the law! Maybe then people will wear them. The fine needs to be enough to make them wear them the next time. I see cars with young children jumping around without a seat belt. It makes me so mad. The children can be killed easily in a minor wreck.
  • They show the stats for how many are killed for not wearing their seat belt, why not give stats on how many are killed for wearing their seat belts?
  • It appears to be a money making plan.
  • Why not?
  • Absolutely not. There are many safe drivers who simply forget to buckle up.
  • It's the law
  • It doesn't matter one bit to me. I'm not an idiot, I wear my seat belt!
  • Soon they will be able to pull us over for picking our nose!
  • It is a person's decision as to what precautions they take for their safety in their own vehicle.
  • If an individual wishes to thin the gene pool by not wearing a seat belt, then it should be their choice.
  • It's the law and it saves lives.
  • If someone doesn't want to wear a seat belt, that's the chance they take if involved in a bad traffic accident. We shouldn't depend on government to step in to make laws regarding common sense.
  • No, they have more pressing problems such as keeping drunk drivers off the road. That is a lot more important than not wearing a seat belt.
  • Isn't it a law in Missouri you have to wear a seat belt? If so, you're breaking the law just like running a stop sign or any other traffic law, right?
  • While I truly believe they need to be worried about much more serious offenses, it's still a law to wear your seat belt. It could save someone's life, even a child. Also, it gives them a chance to assess the situation for possible drug or alcohol abuse, which causes most accidents. That and people not paying attention because they are talking on cell phones.
  • Put your seat belt on and don't worry about the police.
  • Unless you have a medical condition that prohibits you from wearing a seat belt, you should have one on. There is a law that says you must wear it and whether you agree or not, it's the law. Change the law if you disagree. But you must obey the law.
  • It's the law.
  • Freedom.
  • Some people are short and the belt pulls around their necks, which makes it hard to drive.
  • There should not even be a law requiring seat belts. What sense does it make? More government interference in our lives.
  • Since driving without a seat belt is illegal, then logic would dictate the police could pull you over for doing something illegal.
  • When first passed it was supposed to never be a primary offense. One more broken promise from government officials
  • Not only does the belt reduce the chances of serious injury or death to the user, it also gives them better control of the vehicle, thereby reducing their chances of causing injury or death or property damage to others.
  • I have seen many young children not buckled. That should be a ticket every time.
  • Pushing the envelope too far.
  • Not until school buses are required to have seat belts.
  • I have seen accidents in the past where the driver or passenger have burned to death because their seat belt wouldn't release, therefore, I believe the choice to wear a seat belt should be the driver/passengers decision. I see the good in wearing them. Also, they save many lives.
  • Unless they see a child in danger.
  • How can they prove it?
