A person who called Scott City Police Department Saturday evening to report a train derailment could have simply been mistaken or could have been placing a crank call, police say.

The call came in from a pay phone at 5:55 and reported a train collision between Chaffee and Scott City.

A spokeswoman for the Scott City Police said the woman identified herself and gave the number of the pay phone she said she was using.

"She said she thought there were two trains on one track," the spokeswoman said.

Both Scott City police and Scott County Sheriff's deputies were sent to check the tracks but could find no evidence of a derailment. A spokeswoman for the Scott County Sheriff's Department said they checked with the engineer, who said no derailment had occurred.

The police spokeswoman said it's possible someone who wasn't familiar with trains might have simply made a mistake.
