SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- A home video that reportedly shows police officers striking a man suspected of shooting at a detective will be part of an investigation into the arrest, police said.

The video, taken by a free-lance photographer, shows an officer striking Tony Mann, 33, at least five times near his face, the Springfield News-Leader reported Saturday.

It also shows a police dog biting Mann's leg as officers tried to handcuff him early Friday, the article said.

Officers said the blows were a commonly used tactic to stun a neck nerve to relax a suspect's arm so he can be handcuffed.

"This is not a Rodney King thing where several officers were attacking one man," said Greene County Prosecutor Darrell Moore, referring to the police beating of a Los Angeles motorist in 1991. "This is a situation where one officer was striking him in what appears to be a move to get him to submit."

The video was aired on KYTV in Springfield.

Police Chief Lynn Rowe said authorities subpoenaed the videotape from KYTV and will review it for the investigation, which is launched any time force is used. Rowe would not comment Friday on the tape or officers actions.

A mug shot taken after Mann's arrest shows several scrapes and bruises on his face, swollen eyes and a cut lip.
