JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. -- A Democratic state House member from Southeast Missouri was arrested on suspicion of driving while intoxicated in Missouri's capital city.

Police said Rep. Steve Hodges, 65, of East Prairie, Mo., was arrested about 1:20 a.m. Thursday in Jefferson City.

Hodges did not return a telephone call Thursday from The Associated Press.

KOMU-TV in Columbia, Mo., reported the Cole County Jail says Hodges was not held there and that prosecutors had not filed charges.

Hodges was first elected to the Missouri House in 2006. His 149th District represents Scott, Pemiscot, Mississippi and New Madrid counties.

He ran unsuccessfully for Congress in 2013 against Republican Jason Smith for the open 8th District seat after Republican incumbent Jo Ann Emerson resigned to accept the presidency of the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association.

Term limits bar Hodges from seeking re-election to his Missouri House seat this year.
