New Salem UMC gets grant for equipment

The Missouri United Methodist Foundation recently awarded a $750 grant to New Salem United Methodist church in Daisy. The grant will help the church purchase new furniture for its Sunday school classrooms. An official presentation will be made at the 8:45 a.m. service on Sunday. The Foundation assists United Methodist churches and charities in Missouri with stewardship services.

World Day of Prayer events scheduled

Local events to mark the World Day of Prayer are set for March 4. There will be a service at 1:30 p.m. in the fellowship hall of First Baptist Church in Jackson. World Day of Prayer is sponsored Church Women United and is an ecumenical movement that reaches across denominations around the world. The theme is "Let Our Light Shine." An offering will be collected at the local service to help with the ongoing work of the national committee for World Day of Prayer and portions will be designated to support women's projects in the states and abroad. Catholic parishes collect funds for tsunami relief

Catholic parishes in the Springfield-Cape Girardeau Diocese have raised $200,000 for tsunami relief efforts in Indonesia, India, Sri Lanka and Thailand. The contributions collected on Jan. 8 and 9 were donated to Catholic Relief Services, and will fund both emergency relief efforts and longer-term rehabilitation efforts. The CRS is hoping to raise $25 million.

Speaker from Arizona coming to Cape First

Tommy Barnett, senior pastor of Phoenix First Assembly in Arizona, will speak at 7 p.m. Feb. 28 at Cape First. More than 15,000 people attend Phoenix First each week and the church has 200 outreach ministries ranging from a bus ministry to the Los Angeles Dream Center, a project in the inner city. Barnett has written several books and serves on committees for Oral Roberts University and Dr. James Dobson's Focus on the Family pastoral ministries department.
