Five Lutheran women to attend convention
Five women from St. Mark Lutheran Church in Cape Girardeau are attending the Central States Synod Convention this weekend in Atchison, Kan. Those women are Dee Cannon, Carolyn Pendergrass, Lora Henk, Helen Lohmeier and Linda Train.
All the women attending will take gifts to be presented to DOVES, Inc., a domestic violence emergency service program in Atchison.
The women of the ELCA hold a convention each year in the central states synod with other churches in Kansas and Missouri.
Guest speaker coming to Trinity Lutheran
The Rev. Paul H. Jilg of Little Rock, Ark., will be the guest speaker at Trinity Lutheran Church as the celebration of the 150th anniversary of the church continues. He will preach at 6 p.m. tonight and at 8 and 10:30 a.m. Sunday.
He served as associate pastor of the church from 1976 to 1977 and as administrative pastor from 1977 to 1981.
He served as pastor for churches in Arkansas and Iowa before retiring in 1995.
VBS coming to Friedheim church
Vacation Bible school will be held Aug. 8 to 10 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Freidheim. The event will be from 6:30 to 8:45 p.m. Aug. 8 and from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Aug. 9 and will conclude from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. Aug. 10.

ZOEgirl to present concert in Cape
ZOEgirl, a contemporary Christian pop trio, will perform a benefit concert Aug. 16 at the Show Me Center.
The group includes Jackson native Kristin Swinford and Alisa Girarde and Chrissy Conway.
The concert also includes music by Mike Dumey and Robyn Hosp and the Travis Lee Band. Tickets are available online at www.showmecenter.biz or www.tickets.com, Schnucks and FYE or by calling 651-5000.
The concert will benefit the Lutheran Family and Children's Services of Missouri which provides adoption, birth parent counseling, foster care and senior services throughout Southeast Missouri. For information, contact Molly Strickland at 334-5866.
Oran pastor attends chaplain conference
The Rev. John Harth, pastor of Guardian Angel Catholic Church in Oran recently attended the international conference of police chaplains in Spokane, Wash.
Hart is chaplain for the Scott County Sheriff's Department and the Oran Police Department. He also serves as chaplain for the North Scott Ambulance District and the Oran Fire Protection District.
During the conference, which included 488 chaplains from nine different countries, Hart participated in workshops dealing with domestic abuse, hostage situations, stress management and how to work with undercover officers, corrections officers and dispatchers.
Gothard conference set in Cape Girardeau
The Basic Seminar designed by Bill Gothard and the Institute for Basic Life Principles will be held Aug. 11 to 16 at Lynwood Baptist Church in Cape Girardeau.
The seminar introduces people to the practical solutions to every problem in life that are found using principles from the Bible. Events are planned for both adults and children.
The seminar will be from 7 to 10 p.m. Aug. 11 to Aug. 14 and from 9:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. Aug. 15. It will conclude Aug. 16 with sessions from 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Registration is $60 per person or $95 for couples.

Lutherans attend convention on families
Five area residents recently attended an international Lutheran convention in Peoria, Ill. They were Harvey and Janet Loenneke and Elroy and Paula Heimsoth of Jackson and Carolyn Fielder of Cape Girardeau.
The convention focused on Christian families and is part of the Lutheran Hour Ministries.
The event was held July 17 to 20 and was the group's 86th annual event. The theme was "Ripe for Harvest," and includes sessions on outreach, training and preaching.
Lutheran youth plan to attend camp
Several youth and sponsors from St. Mark Lutheran Church ELCA will be attending Bible camp in the coming week. The camp is sponsored by ELCA churches in Southeast Missouri and Southern Illiniois.
The youth attending Adventure Camp are Sarah Goeke, Kyle Schoen, John and Cassie Kipper and Anna Malone. Youth attending Bible camp are Russell Hoffman, Cate Goeke, Terry Schoen, Todd Heuring , Julie and Diane Langenfeld, Taylor and Travis Herbst and Thomas and Mary Dodd. Adult sponsors are Linda, Terry and Annie Schoen, Tim and Loretta Dodd and Jan and Rick Heuring and Arlysse Popp.
