Author and speaker Ruth Shinness Brinduse will be at First Assembly of God Church at 312 Dearborn St. in Scott City. Brinduse has published five books, including "Unlocking the Heavens." She will conduct a seminar in the church fellowship hall from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Nov. 19 and at 10:30 a.m. Nov. 20.
Local churches are collecting donations for a variety of charity efforts at this time of the year. Here's a list of what's going on:
* Hurricane Katrina: Lynwood Baptist Church is helping churches affected by Hurricane Katrina. Volunteers for short-term mission trips and also monetary donations are needed.
* Presbyterian Disaster Assistance: First Presbyterian Church in Cape Girardeau is collecting money for relief efforts for hurricanes Katrina and Rita as well Hurricane Stan in Central America and the earthquake in Kashmir.
* Lutheran Family and Children's Services: The Southeast Missouri office is collecting gifts for families living in poverty. Contact the LFCS office at 334-5866 for ages and needs of families. Deadline is Nov. 22.
* Operation Christmas Child: Cape First Assembly of God Church and Jackson First Baptist Church are collecting gift-filled shoeboxes for children.
* Home for Battered Children: St. John's United Church of Christ in Jackson is collecting donations such as trash bags, toilet paper, cleaning supplies, night lights, towels and books for St. John's Home for Battered Children.
* FISH pantry: Grace United Methodist Church is collecting cake, cookie and brownie mixes for the local FISH food pantry.
* Grace Warming Tree: Grace United Methodist Church is collecting gloves, hats, mittens, scarves and socks for children in local elementary schools.
* Toy Box Collection: Hanover Lutheran Church is collecting toys for the Cape Jaycees Toy Box Drive.
