MBC president attends legislative prayer service

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. -- The Rev. Mitchell Jackson, pastor of Miner Baptist Church near Sikeston, Mo., and president of the Missouri Baptist Convention, attended a commissioning prayer service prior to the start of the state legislative session on Wednesday. Mitchell offered prayer for the state senators, their families and staff. The prayer service was held at Concord Baptist Church in Jefferson City.

Jackson student places second in poster contest

A Jackson student recently placed second in a poster and essay contest sponsored by Western Catholic Union. More than 817 entries from 17 schools in Missouri and Illinois were received. Shannon Brennan, a sixth-grader at Immaculate Conception School in Jackson, placed second in the poster contest for fourth through sixth grades. She received $30. The contest theme was "What is your favorite Christmas memory or experience?" Western Catholic Union is a fraternal benefit society that offers insurance and annuities as well as community service projects. It has sponsored the poster and essay contest for seven years.

Souper Bowl collections planned for Feb. 6

Youths at congregations throughout Southeast Missouri will be collecting donations Feb. 6 for Souper Bowl Sunday. Canned food and cash donations are shared with local food pantries as part of a nationwide program. For more information, visit www.souperbowl.org.

Parishes take collection for tsunami victims

Parishes throughout the Catholic Diocese of Springfield-Cape Girardeau will take up special collections this weekend for the communities devastated by the recent tsunamis. All money collected will be forwarded to Catholic Relief Services to fund emergency relief programs and longer-term rehabilitation programs. The effort is part of a national response sponsored by the U.S. Conference of Bishops. Individuals who want to make a donation can contribute online at www.catholicrelief.org or may send donations to Catholic Relief Services, Attention: Tsunami Emergency, P.O. Box 17090, Baltimore, Md. 21203-7090.
