The Rev. Paul C. Reinert, chancellor emeritus of St. Louis University, will speak to members of the Downtown Rotary Club today at noon at the Holiday Inn.
Reinert served as president of St. Louis University for 25 years.
He became chancellor in 1974 to devote more time to strengthening support for the university and to enhancing the university's midtown environment. In 1990, he became Chancellor Emeritus, but continues to work full-time in the area of institutional support.
He has served as head of the 900-member Association of American Colleges, the National Council of Independent Colleges and University, the Association of Urban Universities, the North Central Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools and the Missouri Association of Colleges and Universities.
Reinert has also served on numerous federal commissions and has been a member of the board of directors of many groups, including the American Council on Education, the National Catholic Educational Association, the Council for Financial Aid to Education and the Educational Testing Service of Princeton, N.J.
In 1967, Reinert led St. Louis University in becoming the first major Catholic university in the country to reorganize its Board of Trustees with a majority of laymen, giving laymen and clergy combined legal responsibility for institutional policy and operations.
Reinert has also been an active civic leader. He has served on Civic Progress, Inc., a small group which has guided redevelopment in the city. In 1972, he received the city's most prestigious award, the St. Louis Award.
