Voters have a week to register for the Nov. 3 general election. The deadline is 5 p.m. Oct. 7.

Those who have never registered to vote may register in Jackson at the county clerk's office, 1 Barton Square, and Riverside Regional Library, 204 S. Union Street.

In Cape Girardeau, people may register at the voter registration office, 44 N. Lorimier, and the Cape Girardeau Public Library, 711 N. Clark.

For added convenience, the clerk's offices in Cape Girardeau and Jackson will be open Monday and Tuesday until 6:30 p.m.

The National Voter Registration Act, also known as the motor voter bill, allows people to register at the Department of Revenue license bureau offices and offices of Employment Security, Division of Family Service and the Cape Girardeau County Health Department.

Cape Girardeau County Clerk Rodney Miller said those who have never registered have until the Oct. 7 deadline to be eligible for the Nov. 3 election.

In addition, voters who have moved should update their registration.

Registration can be updated on Election Day but may require voters going to more than one polling place to get things sorted out.

Turnout in Cape Girardeau County was low for the August primary election. Only 5,082 people voted. There are 43,450 registered voters in the county. The August turnout represented about 12 percent of voters in the county.

"We're expecting a much better turnout for the general election," Miller said. "The ballot is difficult. We do not have a lot of candidates, but we have a lot of constitutional issues."
