Cape County Industrial Recruitment Group: Over the past several months there has been a great deal of discussion about Scott City in the Southeast Missourian. It appears upon closer investigation that there are a few people in Cape Girardeau who do not want the City of Scott City involved in any way with this new group.

As you will recall, last year it was agreed by the board that I could spend time to put this group together. I did a great deal of work in talking to each person that was to be involved and ultimately was successful in causing the group to be formed. It was also our position that Scott City was to be involved due to the fact that part of the city was in Cape Girardeau County.

With all the work begin done against Scott City, I felt there was a need for someone to work for them. I have assisted both the city and the Chamber of Commerce in Scott City in being able to stay in the group. I did this behind the scenes and again succeeded in keeping them involved. When Shirley Young tried to raise funds for the city, the response was one of fear to give money due to the power of those opposing them. It was at this time that I felt the RCGA should come to the aid of their member organization and in an open and public way. As a result, we have received donations for Scott City and have assured donors their names would not be made public.

The reason these donors wish to remain anonymous is because of fear. Those opposing this are very powerful. We, as an organization, could see some attacks from this action. I feel this is very important for us to take the side of our members even if the opposition is powerful and vindictive. I would not, as a rule, but the RCGA in such a position, but in this case, I feel it is the principal of the thing. If we cannot stand up for our believes, we should not be here.
