MOUNDS, Ill. -- The Mounds city clerk accused of shooting her husband Christmas Day was charged in Pulaski County Circuit court Monday with aggravated discharge of a firearm and aggravated domestic battery. Nancy Beegle, 63, was arrested at 1:30 a.m. Saturday after allegedly shooting her husband with a .25-caliber handgun after a domestic dispute, according to Pulaski County authorities. Glenn Beegle's injuries are not considered life-threatening. State's Attorney Grayson Gile said there may be a fitness hearing held to determine whether Nancy Beegle's mental state and health will allow her to stand trial. She has no known prior criminal history. According to Mounds Mayor Grace Richards, deputy city clerk Pam Valentine will take over Nancy Beegle's duties. Richards said the city council has not decided whether it will ask her to step down. Nancy Beegle remains in the Tri-State Justice and Detention Center in Ullin, Ill., in lieu of a $100,000 bond.
The Cape Girardeau and Jackson police departments each have around 500 firearm safety kits they will give away to anyone who wants one. The kits can be picked up at each police station during normal business hours. "We encourage residents to pick up a Project ChildSafe safety kit so they can securely store their firearms," said Cape Girardeau Sgt. Rick Schmidt. Each kit has a cable-style lock that fits on most types of handguns, rifles and shotguns. Project ChildSafe, developed by the National Shooting Sports Foundation, has made kits available throughout the country.
