Looting suspect bound over for arraignment

The third defendant accused of looting a Cape Girardeau County home was bound over for circuit court Monday. William R. Porter, 43, of 2920 Perryville Road, waived his right to a preliminary hearing before Associate Circuit Judge Gary A. Kamp. The judge scheduled him for arraignment Monday before Circuit Judge William Syler. Porter is accused, along with his nephew Stephen D. Sheldrake II, 24, and his wife Dana L. Sheldrake, 28, of stealing nearly $50,000 in vehicles, antiques and electronics from the home near Fruitland. The three were charged with felony burglary and three counts of stealing. The Sheldrakes were also scheduled to be arraigned Monday.

Oran man gets nine years for making meth

A 9-year sentence was handed down Monday to an Oran, Mo., man who confessed to attempting to manufacture methamphetamine in Cape Girardeau. Anthony Dunivan, 36, pleaded guilty to felony possession with intent to manufacture and misdemeanor resisting arrest before Judge Benjamin Lewis. Police responding to a call of a chemical odor at 908 S. Sprigg St., found meth-producing chemicals inside the home, police spokesman Jason Selzer said at the time. Dunivan and another suspect, Raymond Martin, returned to the home after the officer's discovery. Dunivan fled the scene but was caught, Selzer said. He was sentenced to nine years in prison for the felony and 60 days concurrent in jail for the misdemeanor. Martin, 43, of 908 S. Sprigg St., was scheduled for a preliminary hearing in front of Associate Circuit Judge Gary A. Kamp Thursday for the charge of possession with intent to manufacture meth.

Sexual assault charges dismissed against teen

Charges against a teenager accused of sexually assaulting a child were dismissed Monday when a mental evaluation deemed the defendant did not understand his actions. Robert D.L. Maglone, 18, of 827 N. Spanish St., was originally charged with felony sexual assault and misdemeanor child molestation for the October attack of a 14-year-old girl behind the Victory Outreach Church. A mental evaluation on Maglone determined he did not understand the consequences of his actions. Prosecuting attorney Morley Swingle agreed that if a permanent guardian was appointed for Maglone, he would drop the charges. During an appearance before Judge Benjamin Lewis Monday, Maglone's defense attorney said that such a guardian was appointed, and the charges were dropped, according to Swingle.

Man accused of break-in pleads guilty to burglary

A man videotaped breaking into his employer's Cape Girardeau home pleaded guilty Monday to burglary. Chad B. Peltz, 26, of 175 Forrester Drive, entered his plea to the June 13 break-in at 402 Chesley Drive. Peltz, who had been hired by the homeowner to lay tile, allegedly broke into the house and filmed by security cameras when the owner was away. Sentencing was scheduled for Oct. 10.

Ill. police need help finding hit-and-run car

Illinois State Police were asking for the public's help in identifying a vehicle that sent three people to a hospital in a weekend hit-and-run accident. Around 1:40 a.m. Sunday, a blue vehicle traveling west on the Bill Emerson Memorial Bridge rear-ended a tan Mazda, according to a state police news release. Three of the four occupants in the Mazda were taken to a local hospital for treatment. The extent of their injuries was not immediately known. The offending vehicle, which continued into Missouri following the accident, was described as a blue, box-style older model Chevrolet, possibly an Impala or Caprice. It would have extensive front-end damage and a tan paint transfer from the Mazda, the release stated. Anyone with information should contact Illinois State Police District 22 at (618) 845-3740.
