Faulty wiring said to be cause of Sikeston blaze

SIKESTON, Mo. -- Sikeston Department of Public Safety officers responded to a report of a fire at 7:46 a.m. Wednesday at 222 W. Gladys. Three minutes later, DPS firefighters arrived to find flames showing from the second story and heavy smoke. One of the children in the home said he smelled smoke and told an adult woman who discovered fire in an upstairs bedroom, according to Sgt. Bill Mygatt of the DPS. No injuries were reported although the structure's second story suffered extensive damage. An investigation determined the fire's cause to be related to wiring behind an entertainment center.

Sikeston drug suspects wanted for Neb. murder

SIKESTON, Mo. -- Sikeston narcotics officers investigating some marijuana sales found more than they expected when they checked into the background of two suspects. It was discovered that warrants had been issued for the men in connection with the 1999 murder of a Phoenix, Ariz., resident killed in Omaha, Neb. Shortly after receiving the Nebraska warrants for Quan Lowery, 24, and Antonio D. Parr, 25, both currently living in Sikeston, police obtained search warrants for the local residences where the men were alleged to be staying. Approximately 60 "dime bags" of marijuana, packed for distribution, were found in the search for the pair. The two men await transfer to the Scott County Jail in Benton for extradition proceedings. No bond was set on the Nebraska warrants.
