DEXTER, Mo. -- After 15 surgeries on his left leg, Army Spc. Derek Abelson hopes to soon be back on duty with the Army. Deployed to Iraq in June, the Dexter native was injured by an explosive and returned stateside in October. Now stationed at Fort Campbell, Ky., he hopes the Army has a place for him after he recovers. "We aren't sure about active duty because of the nerve damage done to my leg," Abelson said. "The Army said that they would work with me and find something for me to do."
POPLAR BLUFF, Mo. -- For the first time in Butler County's history, squad cars used by the sheriff's department will be owned by the county -- not the deputies. Previously, deputies had to purchase an approved squad car and maintain it, but they could receive up to $10,200 annually to cover their payments and expenses. Deputies could submit a maximum claim of $850 per month depending on mileage driven. Now deputies will have to pick up a vehicle at the Butler County Justice Center instead of taking their car home with them. The county will begin purchasing new squad cars for 2006.
