The Cape LaCroix Creek Recreational Trail concept was broached to Cape Girardeau voters in 1988 when city officials started a campaign to gather support for a sales tax to pay for a flood-control project.
The 9-mile round-trip trail designed for hikers and bikers called for a blacktop or concrete pathway varying in width from 6 to 8 feet, snaking its way through parks, past benches, along and over the creek and under streets.
Eight years later, officials are eyeing the end of the project, with a completion date of 1997. More than a mile of the trail is open.
