The Southeast Missourian is one of three newspapers which received two awards in the Inland Press Association's Special Sections Contest.

The Missourian received a second place in the "Vacation '91" special section and a third for "TBY: The Best Years."

Awards were presented in four categories, "Best Sales Strategy and Kickoff," "Best Use of Co-op and National Advertising," "Best Non-Traditional Theme," and "Best Editorial and Reader Package."

The Missourian used its Community Relations Department, headed by Pat Zellmer and staffed by Donna Denton, Mary Rushin, and Marcia Wagner, to get national advertising in the new vacation publication. The section hit many areas with the communications department, resulting in several new advertisers for the newspaper.

First in the category was the Saginaw, Mich. News, which attracted more than $30,000 in new advertising sold for a local department store's 90th anniversary section.

Judge said the Missourian's "TBY: The Best Years' "put a new and happy face on the traditional senior-citizen's publication, which includes articles on travel, activities, people, features of interest and laughter." Winner in the Best Editorial category was the Columbus, Ind. Republic, for "Our Towns," a historical look at communities in and round Columbus.

The Grand Haven, Mich. Tribune was winner in the "Best Sales Strategy" category for a section called "It's Elementary," and the Cedar Rapids, Iowa Gazette was winner in the "Best Non-Traditional" category, with a special "Women's International Bowling Conference" section.
