Police are investigating at least five burglaries -- and two more attempts -- that took place in Jackson overnight Tuesday in which the perpetrators broke into homes and vehicles.

While the Jackson Police Department was releasing little information, department spokesman Lt. Rodney Barnes confirmed that the incidents were related. Burglaries were reported on Strawberry Lane, Briarwood Street, Primrose Lane and Connie Drive. Attempted burglaries were also reported on Briarwood Street and Abbie Court.

"We have several of that occurred in the same area, so obviously they were targeting that one neighborhood," Barnes said.

Barnes would not specify what was taken, saying it could hamper the investigation. He said at least some of the homes and vehicles were unlocked and that some of the home invasions took place while residents were at home and presumably asleep. More reports may be forthcoming, Barnes said.

In the meantime, Barnes encouraged residents to take security precautions and to make sure their vehicles and homes were locked.

"We've had a rash of thefts from unlocked property," Barnes said.
