BENTON -- A Scott County R-4 School District bond issue for equipment and improving school facilities was defeated by 70 votes in Tuesday's election.

The district was asking to borrow $1.6 million but voters defeated the issue 386 to 316.

Scott City School Board incumbent Nancy Caldwell retained her seat with 401 votes and Rick Sample won the second open seat. He beat Lisa Ellison 331 to 189.

Caldwell was a teacher for 32 years before joining the school board. She claimed her second term in this election.

Sample has been involved as a volunteer in school activities for years and this was his first attempt to claim a seat. Ellison is the vice president of Scott City's Parent-Teacher Organization.

Danny Finley and Alvin Vandeven won three-year terms on the Chaffee School Board with votes of 405 and 245 respectively. They beat out Debbie Patterson, 233, and Kathy Kinsey, 108.

Linda Wessel claimed 344 votes to beat out Joan Hooker, 184, and Candace Witcher, 30, for Wayne Pressley's unexpired term on the Chaffee School Board.

Pressley resigned Dec. 1 after serving just six months on the board.

In Oran, incumbents Tom Urhahn and Rosalia Friga beat challenger Tony Wagoner, 253, 208 to 163, for two seats on the Oran School Board.

Three challengers ran for two seats on the Kelso C-7 board with Randy Kern, 216, and Robin Burger, 203, beating Chuck Goodale, 52, for the positions.
