Quayle will make three appearances here, including one at the airport when he arrives. The vice president is not scheduled to speak at the airport; however, that is subject to change, a staff member said Thursday.

The airport arrival is the only event that is completely open to the public. Quayle will spend a few minutes greeting people before departing around 2 p.m. for a tour of the Southeast Missouri Regional Port near Scott City.

Quayle will ride in a motorcade to the port, and is scheduled to arrive at 2:25 p.m. During his 45 minutes at the port he will tour the facility and speak to an expected crowd of around 200 people.

Quayle's remarks at the port are not open to the public; however, tickets for admission can be obtained through the port office in Scott City, through the Farm Bureau, and through the Cape Girardeau Chamber of Commerce.

Allan Maki, executive director of the SEMO Port Authority, will take Quayle on a brief tour of the port. They will be joined by Morty Potashnick of Sikeston, chairman of the port Board of Commissioners, and Peter Kinder of Cape Girardeau, vice chairman of the board.

The vice president will focus his remarks on agriculture, foreign trade and the economy.

Around 3:30 p.m. Quayle will arrive at the Holiday Inn to attend a private reception to raise funds for the Missouri Republican Party.

Quayle will come to Cape Girardeau from Springfield, where he is addressing a meeting of the Missouri Bar Association. From Cape Girardeau, he will return to Andrews Air Force Base in Washington, D.C.

Scott City Mayor Larry Forhan said Thursday his town is looking forward to the vice president's visit. Although he is not scheduled to stop in Scott City, the motorcade will pass through the main part of town going both to and from the port.

Forhan has also signed a proclamation declaring today as "Dan Quayle Day" in his city.

Last night members of the Southeast Missouri State University Young Republicans gathered in the University Center to make posters that will be handed out to people attending today's rally.

Two weeks ago the Young Republicans made signs for the visit of First Lady Barbara Bush.

This is the third visit of the presidential campaign to Cape Girardeau. On Sept. 16 Mrs. Bush attended the Southeast Missouri District Fair. Last Friday Tipper Gore, wife of Democratic vice presidential candidate Albert Gore, spoke on the Common Pleas Courthouse lawn.

The last time a sitting vice president came to Cape Girardeau was in 1984, when George Bush spoke at the university. Two years earlier Bush attended a fund-raiser in Cape Girardeau for U.S. Rep. Bill Emerson. In 1980, Vice President Walter Mondale spoke at an airport campaign rally the weekend before the election.
