The Missouri Highways and Transportation Commission has scheduled an Oct. 1 public hearing on the design of improvements to Highway 25 and South Elementary School in Jackson.
Commission officials will be on hand to discuss the economic, environmental and social effects and any goals of the project designed to relieve traffic congestion at the school. Held from 4 to 7 p.m. at the school, 1701 S. Hope St., the the meeting will have an open-house format.
The installation of a stoplight and turn lanes at the entrance of the school is scheduled to begin by next summer and be complete by the beginning of the 2010-2011 school year, Jackson city administrator Jim Roach said.
Traffic often backs up near the school and intersection during peak times before and after school. That congestion has even caused accidents.
The project is a partnership between Jackson, the Missouri Department of Transportation and Jackson Schools.
